In the days before widespread use of navigation radars, a ship's navigator would fix his position at night primarily though the use of lighthouses ashore. This is all stuff I learned in Sea Scouts. It's not terribly difficult, but it does require constant attention. Maybe someone forward this to 7th Fleet?
