The Battle of Verdun Begins One Hundred Years Ago Today, 21 February 1916

    Verdun is probably the most intense battlefield I have walked on. The scale of artillery use as indicated by extant chartering, and the magnitude of the casualty count as shown in the ossuary alone is staggering.
