My grandfather never attended any Remembrance Day or ANZAC Day activities, despite being at one stage the most senior officer remaining alive and being formally invited to lead the marching column. He didn’t feel the need or the right to attend such things.

He said the most excitement he had was a jeep accident in the Western Desert and the only shooting he saw was on a range. He was a staff officer.
