One of the big threats the Navy faces in the littorals is the sea skimming supersonic anti-ship cruise missile.

The sea skimming flight profile means the very short radar horizon of surface ships limits detection range. The supersonic speed means reaction time is very limited. The greater kinetic energy of a supersonic missile increases the damage done, even before warhead effects are counted.

Rule of thumb: If you’re gonna get hit, get hit with a broadside shot. If fortune smiles, it blows through you through-and-through, perhaps venting outboard. That raking shot was horrific– it tore right through the length of the ship. You’re not bringing that ship home.

Yeah, I was pretty impressed. But go look again. There were TWO missiles.

These missiles are also becoming stealthy, even further limiting detection range.

The bottom missile skipped off the right side of the hull. Still did damage though!
