U.S. Pacific Fleet boss sacks three-star fleet commander after a rash of incidents
The head of U.S. Forces Pacific is preparing to sack the head of the three-star U.S. 7th Fleet after a string of mishaps among the Japan-based ships that have rocked the Navy to its core.
Adm. Scott Swift is traveling to Japan and plans to remove Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin for a loss of confidence in is leadership there, two U.S. officials confirmed.
Wall Street Journal first reported the pending firing.
Huge. I can't remember the last time a fleet commander was fired.

Deviant Company Live Fire
One of the loooong time readers of the blog is a member of the Nevada Army National Guard (and kick ass World of Warships player). Recently, his unit converted from Bradley mounted Cavalry back to his true love, M1 mounted Armor. And of course, after conversion, there's a requirement for live-fire qualification. And as everyone knows, the important thing about a live-fire quals ins't the gunnery, but the moto video!

Divers have discovered remains of USS John S. McCain (DDG-56) sailors during an evaluation of the ship after it arrived at Changi Naval Base in Singapore, Pacific Fleet Commander Adm. Scott Swift told reporters on Tuesday.
Following McCain’s collision with Liberian-flagged chemical tanker Alnic MC, 10 sailors were reported missing.
Swift, speaking dockside at Changi, also confirmed reports Malaysian naval forces recovered a body at sea, but as of 7 a.m. EST said the Navy had yet determined whether these remains were from McCain. Search and rescue operations will continue, Swift added, until there is no likelihood of discovering anyone.
“We have found remains in the John S. McCain,” Swift said.
“The Malaysian Navy has found some remains as well. It is to be determined if the remains that were discovered by the Malaysian Navy are one of the ten missing sailors but we look forward to starting the process to identifying those remains.”The news is not surprising, unfortunately. And worse, the fact that the number of remains recovered wasn't disclosed raises the question if all the sailors will be recovered. Lost at sea is an all too common fate for the seafaring.
Again, as with the USS Fitzgerald, we urge you to wait for the investigation.
But while we wait for that investigation, there are reasonable questions to ask. Are there risks to operations unique to the 7th Fleet area of operations and the Forward Deployed Naval Forces (FDNF)? Have the changes in Surface Warfare Officer training pipelines created a systemic risk of poor seamanship? Is the current Operational Tempo unsustainable? The SWO community has a long tradition of competing to do more with less, never saying no to a tasking. It's leading to exhaustion throughout the fleet. Was the eight year tenure of Ray Mabus as Secretary of the Navy too focused on social justice at the expense of readiness and training (yes, yes it was)?
One more question- do these operational questions extend to other communities in the Navy, and to the other services, increasing operational risk across the force?
Let us mourn are sailors, but let us also take a cold, sober look at the challenges we need to keep the forces from becoming the hollow force of the 1970s.

More in the USS Fitzgerald Investigation
In my previous post describing the damage control efforts post collision, I shared a document.
As we wait and pray for news of the USS John S. McCain,* I want to clarify some potential misunderstandings. I've seen this article from American Greatness by Angelo Codevilla making the rounds on Facebook and other social media. It's garbage.
What was released was a Line of Duty (LOD) investigation. Any time there is a death or serious injury of a service member, an LOD is conducted to determine if the death or injury was in connection with the service member's duty, or if it was a result of the service member's misconduct. The scope of an LOD is thus quite limited. For instance, the report didn't focus on the events prior to the collision. Secondly, an LOD is not used as the basis for punitive actions under the UCMJ. It's primary purpose is to determine:
Determinations on the status of personnel regarding entitlements to pay during disability,
disability benefits, severance pay, retirement pay, increases of pay for longevity, survivor's
benefits, involuntary extensions of enlistments, dates of expiration of active obligated service,
and accrual of annual leave.Separately, but concurrently, there is another investigation, known as a JAGMAN (Judge Advocate General's Manual) investigation. The Navy describes a JAGMAN investigation:
Almost every naval officer will have contact with an administrative investigation (commonly referred to as a JAGMAN investigation) during their military career, either as an investigating officer or as a convening authority. The basic regulations governing such investigations are contained in the Manual of the Judge Advocate General (JAGMAN). The primary purpose of an administrative investigation is to provide the convening authority and reviewing authorities with information regarding a specific incident which occurs in the Department of the Navy. These officials will then make decisions and take appropriate action based upon the information contained within the investigative report.
The JAGMAN investigation, unlike the LOD, is far more wide-ranging, covering the totality of an incident.
Furthermore, the Navy is, I believe, concurrently conducting a Board of Inquiry.
The command triad, and several others have already been relieved of duty on Fitzgerald. That is an administrative action.
Eventually, the JAGMAN and BoI results will be published. Those bearing responsibility will be held accountable, still face the possibility of punishment under the UCMJ, which can range from a verbal admonition to a full blown General Court Martial.
Spreading silly cover up conspiracies helps no one. Be patient.

American Talibantifa
There is very little philosophical difference between the 2001 demolition by the Taliban of the ancient Buddhas in Bamiyan and the recent destruction of Confederate statues and monuments across the South. Nor is there an appreciable difference between the desired destruction of the Giza Pyramids and the demand to do the same to the Confederate Stone Mountain memorial in Georgia. Both represent the Orwellian imperative to remove unpopular or inconvenient history. Both were/are perpetrated by violent, thuggish, ignorant mobs who are collectively and individually too brainwashed or stupid to understand the portent of their actions. As the Taliban declared such monuments "ancient sites built by infidels", so now the American version is that monuments to the sons of the Confederacy were built by treasonous and hateful racists. Of course, the Civil War, in which my great grandfather fought for the North, and died a young man of his wounds, was about much more than slavery. The issues surrounding the war are, as any student of history knows, incredibly complex. But, like so many other things, the Left desires a "bumper sticker" explanation that plays to emotion rather than understanding and knowledge.
Some things don't fit on a bumper sticker. Slave owners were exclusively Democrats. Southern secessionists were Democrats, supported by pro-slavery "Peace Democrats" in the North. After the war and through the last century, the Ku Klux Klan was comprised entirely of Democrats, one of whom served in the US Congress until 2010. Despite the unquestioned cruelty of slavery, more Black Americans fought for the South than the North. Confederate Veterans were declared US War Veterans in 1958, despite the "Institute for Southern Studies" trying to convince us otherwise.
Perhaps the alt-left would like to forcibly collect repayment of the VA benefits of the last surviving Civil War pensioner, the disabled child of a Confederate soldier? Or sue the descendants of Sylvester Magee, a black man who fought for Mississippi, and believed to be the last living freed slave (he died in 1971).
Funny, the American Talibantifa seems to be rather ambivalent toward modern slavery, nearly the exclusive purview of their besties, the muhammedans. (Though there are some black professional athletes that claim themselves to be slaves, or at least indentured servants, to the tune of being paid several hundred thousands of dollars per game, it might be worth noting. Oh the humanity.)
So what is the end game of this? Ask Marcuse and Alinsky. And Brother Barack and Sister Hillary. Demonizing of the Founding Fathers as hateful, bigoted slaveowners who could not possibly have built a proper model for government. Replace the Constitution, of course, with a new document full of Social Justice and Economic Justice. Where the heterosexual white male is persona non grata, guilty of all manner of oppression and hate just for being white and male and straight.
Ponder these: We can be subject to lectures about how hateful anyone must be who does not condemn everything Southern and Confederate, by none other than Albert W. Gore Jr., whose father was a proud Segregationist and Dixiecrat.
And today, in Boston, where there is a university named after the great champion of free speech, Justice Louis Brandeis, Mayor Marty Walsh and other city officials are actively suppressing the Constitutional free expression of law-abiding Americans because they label those with contrary views "hate groups," and declare them unwelcome in their city.
The ability to speak one's mind, to challenge the political orthodoxies of the times, to criticize the policies of the government without fear of recrimination by the state is the essential distinction between life in a free country and in a dictatorship.
If only. By the way, what's the latest on those Russian hacks? And any word on the IT managers for the DNC? URR here.

And Now, Turku
Varying reports of either one or two dead, and eight injured by an as-yet unidentified knife-wielding man on a "rampage". I am sure we will get a lot of "unknown motives" and "not terrorism" from the pathetically partisan news media. But The Daily Caller gives us this:
Eyewitness video shot from a nearby building shows people fleeing as cries of ‘Allahu Akbar’ are heard in the background.
No word on whether Wolf Blitzer thinks the attack was a copycat of the Islamist who stabbed a police officer in Michigan in June. Or whether he was a copycat of the Islamist knife and machete attacks in Woolwich, or Abu Dhabi, or Hamburg, or Berlin, or Columbus, or St. Cloud, or London, or….
In fact, I am not sure a "motive" for a muhammedan shouting "Allahu Akbar" while on a stabbing spree will ever be determined, or at least admitted to by the Wolf Blitzers and Fareed Zakarias of the world. Unlike the white guy who ran his car into the crowd, who was obviously a Nazi and hated everyone, and wanted blacks (and presumably Jews) all dead or enslaved. Just like Trump and everyone that voted for him.
A fourteenth victim of yesterday's radical Islamist terror attack in Barcelona has died. Despite four additional arrests, Stratfor yet again called the attacker a "lone wolf". Not sure if they are clear on the term.

And Now, Barcelona; 13 Dead, More Than 50 Injured
A Moroccan muhammedan plows his van into a crowd of tourists in Barcelona, killing thirteen and injuring dozens. ISIS claims responsibility. Two suspected accomplices are arrested.
Despite the fact that guidance over the last two years from ISIS to its terror cells has been to conduct such attacks using automobiles and trucks, and despite Islamist terrorist attacks using vehicles in London (8 dead, 48 injured), Stockholm (4 dead, 17 injured), Westminster (5 dead, 12 injured), Berlin (12 dead, 60+ injured), Nice (84 dead, 100+ injured), Valence (4 injured), and Columbus OH (13 injured), what does Wolf Blitzer suggest was the inspiration for today's act of Islamist vehicular terrorism in Spain? Why, Charlottesville, of course.
So now, it appears that Trump and Trump's supporters are also responsible for Islamist terrorism. Remember, this is the same mainstream media (and same news source) that is pushing the falsehood that Trump is encouraging Nazis and white supremacists in Virginia, despite condemnations far stronger and more timely than ANY from Barack Obama or the very same mainstream media regarding the assassination of five Dallas policemen by a black-power extremist who talked of killing whites, especially white police officers. The media, and Barack Obama were also thunderously silent on the murder of three white men in Fresno by a black man whose objective was to "kill white people".
In the mean time, yet another Islamist terror attack, planned and executed by a terrorist cell, will be answered by prayers, calls for "unity", and "hugging it out". The people closest to the microphones fall into a few categories. Like most celebrities, Katy "Hugs" Perry is a half-conversant imbecile who knows little outside her rich, spoiled, and thoroughly insulated existence. Then there are the "comedians" whose smug ignorance, masked by glib and sarcastic criticism of anything they don't like, entertains similarly shallow intellects; Newscasters, whose mastery of the facts are often wildly incomplete, and whose biases make their way into virtually every sentence of their "reporting", fill the airwaves; And finally, there are the politicians. These special invertebrates run the gamut from Bernie "Three House" Sanders and his proto-Soviet ideas, with his babbling about embracing the people who would like his head removed simply because he is Jewish; Wild-eyed Democrat leftists like Maxine Waters and Nancy Pelosi, whose grasp of reality seems to slip with each passing day; To RINOs like Aunt Lindsey and John "ABSCAM" McCain and John Kasich, the almost-Democrats. And finally, there are others like Missouri State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal, (D-St Louis), who gave us this gem:
But the people behind all of this are not fools. While CNN and the far-left propaganda mill that passes for a free press these days tries to tell you that the Confederacy is equivalent to Nazi Germany, and all traces of them should be torn down, ask yourself what would be next in this Orwellian journey. Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Mason. How could a document created by such hateful racists have any redeeming value? That Declaration of Independence? Racist. And inconvenient. Rights are bestowed by an all-powerful government, NOT by our Creator, to be doled out like royal patronage to those in political favor. Free speech, right to trial, right to privacy, right to keep and bear arms…. health care…. housing…. employment…. education? Only if you comply. Sounds like we need to shred that Constitution and put another in place that is heavy on social and economic justice. Words which mean whatever the leftists with their hands on the levers of power want them to mean.
So, in the eternal battle between the two Thomases, Hobbes and his all-powerful Leviathan, and Jefferson and his belief in personal liberty, you know where the media, academe, Hollywood, the Democrats, and the RINOs stand. Leviathan it is, as long as we are in charge! Unpopular ideas or beliefs, those words and beliefs that "offend", will result in criminal culpability. You know. Thought crimes. Newspeak.
What does the terror attack in Barcelona have to do with Charlottesville? Nothing. And everything. Pay close attention to how the message is shaped. Remember, this is the same mainstream media, Hollywood, academe, and political class who told us for months that Russia had hacked the Democratic National Committee servers. PROVING Trump collusion with Putin. While all the while assiduously ignoring the thoroughly corrupt and unethical machinations of Hillary Clinton and the far left brought to light by the DNC e-mails.
Which is why, to the Far Left, Driss Oubakir is more welcome in America than Joe the Plumber.

Upgunned Stryker in Europe to help shape future infantry lethality
ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Maryland — How the U.S. Army’s new Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle Dragoon performs in the upcoming year in Europe will contribute to how the service shapes its future lethality capabilities within those medium-weight, infantry-centric brigade combat team formations.
The U.S. Army was provided emergency funding from Congress in 2015 — a little over $300 million — to rapidly develop and field a Stryker with a 30mm cannon specifically for an urgent need request from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, which is permanently stationed in Germany. The funding covered development, eight prototypes and upgrades to 83 production vehicles, as well as spares.
“This capability that is coming to 2CR is directly attributable to Russian aggression,” Lt. Col. Troy Meissel, the regiment’s deputy commander, told reporters Tuesday at Henry Field, a live-fire test range here. And the regiment is working actively with foreign partners and the bigger Army in Europe to shape its formation and increase its capabilities to overmatch Russian weapons systems.
18 months is an astonishingly quick development time.
