  • On the East German Border : This ain’t Hell, but you can see it from here

    This October will mark the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the “Iron Curtain” that divided Europe for twenty eight years. Some of us spent a good portion of our young lives on the “bayonet point of western democracy” patrolling and observing the communists on the other side of that arbitrary and very visible line. Here’s a true account of the events of one day that I wrote for the History Channel’s veterans’ project about a decade ago. All of these pictures are mine, too;

    Jonn had an interesting career.

Seeing the inter-German border in person was a moving experience. Seeing it fall less than a year later was even more so.

  • U.S. approves $3.2 billion sale of Boeing P-8A patrol planes to UK | Reuters

The U.S. government has approved the sale of up to nine Boeing Co (BA.N) P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol planes to Britain in a deal valued at up to $3.2 billion, the U.S. Defense Department said Friday.

The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees foreign arms sales, notified Congress about the potential sale on Thursday. Lawmakers now have 15 days to block the sale although such action is unlikely given close ties between the United States and the UK.

The proposed sale will enhance Britain's capabilities to provide national defense and contribute to NATO and coalition operations, DSCA said in a statement. It said the deal was a top priority for Britain.

Good news. After the disaster that was the Nimrod MR.4 program, Britain gave up on developing any maritime patrol capability, and retired their MR.2 fleet. So they've had a gap for several years now. Between India, Great Britain, and Australia, that's helping push down unit costs for our own Navy's purchasing.

One suspects this won't be the last international sale. An awful lot of countries operate the P-3B/C and they are growing due for retirement.

  • Columbine II

The very first Air Force One was an Air Force C-121. And after being found languishing in the boneyard in Arizona, it was partially restored to flightworthiness. And flown to Virginia to complete it’s restoration.  And along the way, the beautiful Constellation was filmed from a B-25 from the Mid America Flight Museum.

Now, some of you sharper readers might have noticed that I took a hop in a B-25 about a week or so ago. And afterwards, as I was chatting with the flight crew, they explained to me that in addition to receiving donations from the public, they also hired out to serve as an air to air photography platform.  You may recall from this video that the rear pane of perspex was missing from the tail gunner position. But what you probably didn’t know was that many of the B-25s flying today can remove the entire rear of the aircraft, leaving a wide panorama for photography. You just gotta make sure the  photographer and his equipment are securely strapped in.

Man, oh man, the Connie is one sexy beast.

  • Muslim Shopkeeper Killed in UK Hate Crime

Of course, the suspect in his murder is Muslim.  Motive?  The shopkeeper wished Christians a Happy Easter. Fox News has the story:

A popular shopkeeper who wished Christians a happy Easter on Facebook was stabbed to death in what police in Scotland say was a “religiously prejudiced” attack carried out by a fellow Muslim, it was reported Saturday.

A vigil was held Friday night in Glasgow’s Shawlands neighborhood in memory of Asad Shah who was killed the day before– a few hours after he apparently posted messages on Facebook that said “Good Friday and very happy Easter, especially to my beloved Christian nation.”

“Let’s follow the real footstep of beloved holy Jesus Christ and get the real success in both worlds,” one of the messages said.

Police said a 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with Shah’s death. Police said the suspect is Muslim. He was not been identified.

When Barack Obama gets finished taking selfies in front of the Che Guevara mural and declaring communism and capitalism a toss-up, perhaps he might address Islamic terrorism.  Or at least explain to Belgium how the US "has their backs" when the US President "stands with Islam".  (Not the part of Islam murdered for wishing Christians a Happy Easter, the ones who murder him for the affront to Islam.)

Not that we should worry. It isn't like the jihadis have networks all across Europe or anything, right?  Oh wait….

The raids have uncovered what is being described as "alarming" evidence of a Europe-wide jihadist cell connected to the attacks in Belgium as well as those in Paris in November.

So how many hundreds of thousands does Hillary want to let in to the US without the slightest ability to vet a single one?

  • ISIS attacks Iraqi base housing U.S. military personnel – CBS News

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, attacked an air base in Iraq that houses U.S. military personnel, the Pentagon said Saturday.

The Pentagon said no service members in the coalition fighting ISIS were affected by the attack at the Ayn al-Assad Air Base.

Citing Iraqi officials, a U.S. military official said that between three and four fighters wearing explosive vests were killed in the attack, CBS Radio News correspondent Cami McCormick reports.

  • Obama: Forget The Difference Between Capitalism And Communism, “Just Decide What Works” | Video | RealClearPolitics

PRESIDENT OBAMA: I guess to make a broader point, so often in the past there's been a sharp division between left and right, between capitalist and communist or socialist. And especially in the Americas, that's been a big debate, right? Oh, you know, you're a capitalist Yankee dog, and oh, you know, you're some crazy communist that's going to take away everybody's property. And I mean, those are interesting intellectual arguments, but I think for your generation, you should be practical and just choose from what works. You don't have to worry about whether it neatly fits into socialist theory or capitalist theory — you should just decide what works.

    via www.realclearpolitics.com

The 95,000 Americans who died to stop the spread of Communism would sure be surprised to learn it was all just an interesting intellectual discussion.

Jesus, I cannot believe we're actually faced with the prospect of an admitted socialist being a nominee from President.

What the hell is going on?
