If you're going to climb Mount Everest, chances are very good you'll fly into Lukla, Nepal, because that's the gateway to the base camp. Tenzig-Hillary Airport is not, however, for the faint of heart. It's one of the most dangerous airports in the world. The list of significant crashes is sobering.

Clip #3: the first pilot was more confident than the last three. He started his run with his nose pretty much even with the taxi line. The other three made a point of giving themselves an extra 30 feet of space. 🙂

Nat Geo had a program about the 10 most dangerous airports in the world and this one in Nepal was the most dangerous. Telluride in CO was on the list as well I believe. This airport is what Twin Otters are built for, love the twatters. Those Dorniers are pretty handy too.

Takeoff looks like deck launch of a C-1 COD (carrier on-board delivery) aircraft back in the day. The C-1 was a twin recip engine aircraft based on the S-2 Tracker. The 2 radial engines made a sweet sound when idling. Usually they would launch with a deck run vs. a catapault. Come to think of it, I don’t know that I ever saw one launched from the cat.
Now that landing is another matter. Can’t tell from the video of the plane landing if he would have had enough room to go around if, for example, he would have landed long and not had enough room to stop.
