Ammo Dump explosion in Ukraine Thursday

Oops. The article says foul play suspected. That may well be, but there’s always the possibility that someone just did something stupid.

Awesome video. In the four years that I played with explosives for Uncle Sam making a mistake that caused anything to go boom was always on our minds. No one played any games while working. We thought (hoped?) that the ammo dump design- revetments, igloos, physical separation of the different types of explosives would prevent any one event from turning into a conflagration as shown in the video. But, who knows, stuff happens. The Polite People would certainly know how to blow up an ammo dump.

Just off the top of my head I would say their ordnance storage procedures need to be revised.

Tim- I don’t think that’s really much of a concern for them anymore.
I mean, it’s not like they have any ordnance left to worry about storing.

That blowed up real good. Given some of the rockets/missiles arcing out of the fireball, I can understand the 10km evac radius.

As a Ukrainian could say, Святе дерьмо траханий !!!
    Shades of Severomorsk 1984.
Some reports say a drone dropped something that set this conflagration off. [I see you’ve added this.]
We’ll see. Surprised you didn’t prefix this with, “Splodey,” Art. Seems to me it qualifies.

Bad as it looks, I came across one report that says it didn’t get the entire dump. What went up is bad enough, tho

“most of the munitions for the Ukraine was stored there.”
    That is literally weapons-grade stupid.

From what I’ve been able to gather, Casey, that isn’t true. It was the largest, however, and the fire didn’t get the whole installation.

QM: that’s good to hear. If nothing else in terms of physical destruction of the city. I’d hate to see photos of the aftermath.
Timactual had a point, though. I don’t think those guys knew how to handle munitions safely.

Casey, no doubt someone screwed up. But, and it’s a big but, if the “accident” was actually sabotage. Alas, such things are in the FSB’s playbook and Putin is really, really wanting to get that land bridge to an earlier theft, Crimea.
