First ran into the booster in its later Apollo form. Built the Estes kit a long time ago. Was surprised to encounter the Mercury version. 🙂

OK, here comes the old curmudgeon who’s going to gripe about how things were better in the old days, but… things were better in the old days.
In the 1950’s NASA needed a test vehicle for the Mercury capsule. Existing rockets were too expensive. So, they engineered a solution using available solid fuel rockets at a fraction of the price.
Somehow, I don’t see today’s NASA (or any gov’t agency) coming up with a cost effective expedient solution to anything. I think the solution today is always “give us more money”.
