STUTTGART, Germany — Special agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are investigating the theft of guns and other military equipment from a base arms room in Stuttgart, military officials said.

“Several semi-automatic pistols, one small-caliber automatic rifle and a shotgun were among the items taken,” said Chris Grey, a CID spokesman.

The Army did not identify all the items stolen or the unit targeted, citing the active investigation. A possible breach of the base fence is also part of the ongoing probe.

“We are looking at all possibilities as the investigation continues, but at this point in the investigation it does not appear that an outside entity stole the firearms and equipment or breached the fence line, but we have not completely ruled it out,” Grey said.

Oh, boy, I'd *hate* to be a part of the Panzer Kaserne community right now, and especially the unit armorer who was responsible.

Unit armorers do very little in the way of arms maintenance. Their role is almost exclusively limited to accountability and physical security of the weapons.

And you know he or she is in for some very uncomfortable interviews.

    Once upon a time, when I was in Germany, a case of hand grenades turned up missing from the ammo dump. As luck would have it, I had been on guard duty at the ammo dump the night before. That was an interesting week. Uncomfortable “interviews” indeed.
    One thing I learned, it seems to be bad form to chuckle when the “interviewer” is getting all sincere and caring up about what damage those items could do to innocent children right after the other “interviewer” was belligerent and threatening.

    Had an interesting few days on USS LASTSHIP when ORDO managed to ‘lose’ a Mk46 once upon a time… Close as anyone ever figured out, he hadn’t counted when they came aboard, just pencil-whipped the paperwork, and there was an extra serial number listed that wasn’t onloaded.

    Wayyyyy back in the dark days of the Carter administration, I was the armorer for B 1-70 Ar, 4ID(M)(Frd) Wiesbaden Air Base, FRG. I was accountable for all the weapons and was the person who performed the -20 level maintenance and maintained the PLL for everything. Keeped me jumping. Never a dull moment.

    An unnamed friend and I used to jokingly speculate about how we could go about coming in on Thursday of a four day weekend and cleaning out our respective arms rooms. Between HHC and a line company, that would have been enough weapons and night vision goggles for about 430 people. Always sort of wondered how much that would net me….. Then I got serious about making a career of the army.

    The grenades were found several days later. What I heard is that they were in a waterproof bag in the back of a 2 1/2 ton truck in a motor pool. As far as I know nobody was found responsible.
    I suspect it was an “inside” job, probably due to incompetence or carelessness. This was pre-terrorism days so security was a wee bit lax.
