I’ve watched these battles with great interest. First question I have to ask, though, is simple. Is this still the free-to-play version or (like every other “free-to-play” game) does this require cash investments to get to this point?

While I do have a premium account, and have spent quite a bit of money in the Premium Shop, there are many, many players at this level, and higher, that haven’t paid a penny.

CAPT- I’m in the same boat as our host, so to speak, with the premium account. I have one, and I’ve bought a few of the premium ships here and there. Out of all the videos that he’s posted of battles in which I’m featured, though, I can only think of one where I’ve been using one of those premium ships that I’ve paid for- ATLANTA. (The Japanese destroyer you see me use, KAMIKAZE R, is a premium ship as well, but it’s one that was awarded for completion of a set of missions and I don’t believe it’s been made available for purchase.)
You can make it all the way to Tier 10, absolutely, without spending a penny. You’ll just get there a lot quicker if you do spend a penny or two here or there.
I made it all the way to Tier 7 in the US cruiser tech tree without spending a penny, and it didn’t take very long at all to get there. Getting from 7 to 10 would have probably taken twice as long as the 1-7 climb, but you can definitely do it. (By contrast, once I had premium, I made it from 1 to 10 in US DD’s and Soviet cruisers, and from 1 to 9 in Soviet DD’s and IJN DD’s, in about the same amount of time it took me to get to Tier 10 in the US cruisers just by themselves.)
We spend quite a lot of time still playing in the low-mid tiers. 4-5-6. It’s a lot of fun, and tends to be less painful on the repair costs, to boot.
