Firebirds

Seeing the public relations success of the movie Top Gun for the Navy, when Hollywood approached the Army about a similar film for Army aviation, the rotorheads signed on. It was… well, less than good.

    Why?
Why did you have to remind me of this movie?
What did I ever do to you?
Now I will be out of scotch killing the memory again, and it will be YOUR fault.

What do you mean less than good? There were all sorts of cool sequences featuring the Apache. Apaches flying, Apaches shooting, Apaches firing missiles, Apaches sitting beautifully on the tarmac, even the very cool Apache simulator. After all, the Apache was the star of that movie, wasn’t it? I think the Apache should have received an Oscar for best actor for it’s work in Fire Birds. Just as the awesome Tomcat starred in Top Gun, Fire Birds was all about the Apache and the flying. All that incidental plot, dialogue and acting by the organic cast members was just the price one had to pay to enjoy watching the most badass helicopter ever created.
Seriously though, how many movies featuring the military ever have decent scripts, acting or directing? They are few and far between. Most are average or even sub-par. But that’s not why we go see them. It’s like the overly dramatic narration and generic guitar rock soundtrack that is the annoying background for practically every air show flight demonstration. It’s there, you wish it weren’t, but that’s not what you’re paying attention to.

I don’t think Firebirds was any less than good than Top Gun. Both movies had great flying scenes, but otherwise were cringe-worthy in many ways.
But what other movie features a Saab Drakken? That was cool!

I think I saw it on cable. All I can remember is Cage shouting “I am the greatest!”

Wow, I’m nostalging hard now. I do agree with the other folks here that the Apache was very well featured in this movie. Please forgive me though I was reminded of this gem. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085255/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_55

When I was a kid we had contests to see how many ant stings we could tolerate. Sort of like the Amazonian Indians. Watching that movie reminded me of that.
