I spent a lot of time listening to Air Traffic Control. And very often, when an aircraft declares an emergency, they really need to lean on ATC for help. But it is sometimes the case that the crew of the emergency aircraft get behind the aircraft. But not this guy. It’s a very minor emergency, but he’s quick to act with authority, formulate a plan, and let ATC know his intentions.

    If I may date myself, listening to RTO chatter can be a great indicator of who’s stressed, has diarrhea of the mouth, or who’s calm/collected, and those cutting and brief with their transmissions. Good stuff

    A while back I saw an animated recreation of the flight that had to put down in the Hudson. They overlaid the animation with real-time radio traffic. ATC was still dithering over where to divert the flight when Sully was putting it down in the river. Every time they gave him direction, his clipped response was, “Unable.”
