The throwback change is one of the decisions to come out of the October combat marksmanship symposium here, where leadership met to streamline the service's marksmanship program.

So, they're going back to the old style kits that were issued when I was in.

Really, between the toothbrush and the obligatory Q-tips, all you needed was to run the rod a few times after a live fire.

With some blanks and no BFA you can shoot the shiznit out of some extra cleaning rods.

What the hell is a “newer, softer cable kit”? I never saw anything else.

UR,the soft cable kits have something like a long cable with a braided puffy covering and a weight on one end. You drop the weighted end through and pull the cloth through. As you pull it, the cloth draws tight and fits through the bore snugly. There are some bristles on one end that work like a bore brush and the cloth cleans the bore. It does not clean the chamber at all-At least the M4/M16 chamber.
The premise is okay, but I prefer what I grew up with. I used this thing for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe we were weird but we also used a knotted boot lace.

You beat me to it. Put that one in the footlocker display to good use. I still use a shaving brush for computers & keyboards.
