    An earlier astronaut (Alan Shepard?; anyway mentioned in Mike Collins magisterial Carrying the Fire) also submitted a milage charge for one of his space voyages.

    There are a lot of miles in each orbit. The numbers added up quickly. The astronaut got a bill for the cost of the launch rocket, a much bigger number.

    A sense of humor from a government pay-roll specialist! Everyone laughed, and moved on. No milage claim or booster rocket cost were paid.
