MANKATO, MINN. — In a rather frightening incident at the Minnesota Air Spectacular in Mankato, the Mayo One helicopter was started by a member of the public, knocking over a tent at around 2:00 pm on Saturday.

“I was sitting near the helicopter when the blades started to turn and I wondered what was going on,” said a stunned Dave Kruse who was a member of the public watching the air show “a tent near the tail of the helicopter tipped over before someone turned it off. Luckily it looked like no one was injured.”

    What a bunch of rookies. When we took UH-1s to airshows, we disconnected the battery. On the MH-53s, our MX guys safety wired the APP handle to point where you’d need a Leatherman and 5 minutes to get it unsecured. Making a helicopter airshow-proof isn’t that hard, just takes a little attention to detail…

    In all my years of going to air shows, I never saw anyone attempt to start an aircraft. People would look, but not touch. Kids who couldn’t do that got their hands slapped by daddy who was always nearby.

    Given the inclination towards stupidity these days, I’m not surprised someone would light off a chopper. Spoiled, poorly trained kids lead to spoiled, poorly trained adults.
