The Vulcan to the Sky Trust has today (Friday 15th May) announced that the 2015 Display Season will be the final one for Avro Vulcan XH558. The Trust plans a fitting farewell season displaying the aircraft to as big an audience as possible before retiring the aircraft in the Autumn.

From the first ever airshow appearance by the Avro Vulcan at the 1952 Farnborough Air Show, the sight and sound of the mighty delta-winged V-Bomber has been etched onto the memory of airshow crowds. These memories continued long after the Vulcan had been retired from frontline service with the Vulcan Display Flight based at RAF Waddington continue to show off the impressive performance of the aircraft at shows around the UK.

All good things come to an end. We tip our cap to the VttS team, and thank them for the spectacular job they’ve done of restoring and presenting XH558 these past few years, and hope that this Vulcan will live a long life on display. We only regret we never had a chance to see her perform in person.

    I saw one perform at an air show at McGuire AFB. This was during the Falklands war. Sort of an “unexpected” appearance. It showed up with two Victor tankers. They kept it all the way over on the other side of the field initially, so you didn’t know it was there. Then she taxied out. As soon as she went wheels up (probably still in ground effect), she rotated into about a 75 deg climb. Granted, not carrying a payload and light on fuel, but still rather impressive.
    After she landed, they taxied her over to the static display area to let the public get a real good look. She’s probably 10 feet off the ground on the landing gear. We had a rain squall come thru in the afternoon and the Brits let about 250 (maybe more) folks take shelter under her. Air shows were so much more fun before paranoia reigned.

    I saw one at Abbottsford, along with a Victor. The Vulcan is a beautiful bird. The Victor, not so much.

    Airsho’s were fun till the Italian demo team couldn’t stay out of the crowd line.

    I saw one at McChord many years ago.
    Lots of low-level crank&bank, lots of noise.
    It was a real crowd pleaser!
    They put on a great show…

    First and only time I saw one live was at Carswell, AFB (now NAS Fort Worth JRB) around 1984-85. Probably the loudest plane I ever heard (and I’ve heard a lot).

    Saw one in person at local airshow at RAF Bentwaters, UK circa 70/71. Impressive “up close & personal.!”
