More than 200 female midshipmen, chiefs and officers will don the new service dress whites in the first of a series of wear tests slated to last through the summer.

The uniform prototypes have the same high collar common to the male uniform. This includes an improved metal clasp that provides better closure and a more professional appearance. The uniform has no chest pockets, and buttons are smaller yet proportional.

The first wear test will take place at the Naval Academy graduation on May 22. Roughly 200 female graduates and six academy staff members, a mix of chiefs and officers, will take part. The midshipmen will wear their standard cover until they are commissioned, and then will don the combination cap. The active-duty testers will wear the new combination cover, a prototype that closely resembles the male cover but is made with women’s head sizes and proportions.

I like it. Every service seems to struggle with providing women with attractive, professional uniforms, but the Navy has seemed to struggle more than the others.

They should have let them keep the WAVE hat, that was a sharp looking piece of head gear.

They should have kept the WAVEs.

Outstanding! Every female officer I knew said they felt out of place not wearing the “Choker Whites” that their fellow officers wore. And not one female office I knew, when they were junior officers like myself, liked the “bucket”; they wanted to look like the rest of the fleet.

I like the jacket. The skirt — not so much. It doesn’t hang well. Might be the material.

I wonder if it’s really necessary to have women wearing skirts instead of nicely tailored dress pants? The latter would be more practical.

I will say that the shoes are pretty horrible.

Last time I used white shoe polish (from one of those cushion tipped applicators), was to write “Caution-L. Hand American Driver” on the back window of my rented RV while in New Zealand. Worked too, got many thumbs up, mouthed “thank-you’s” and what I perceived as a wide berth. Not related I know…just sharing. My vote for “O” Class A Army uniforms: Pinks & Greens with Sam Browne.

Ladies pants in Navy uniforms have a long, long history of looking awful. If you’re slim and fit, you’ve got a fighting chance of looking OK. If you’ve got the least bit of curves, you’re doomed.

Something is wrong at the Uniform Board, because that uniform actually looks correct.
