Following an Army deployment with the Wolfhounds to Japan in the ’90s (Exercise Orient Shield), some buddies and I took leave and spent a week or so in Tokyo, sightseeing by day, and bar-crawling by night. Good times. One day we went to the Japanese imperial war museum, which is an interesting place to visit.
I remember one of the exhibits consisted of some fragments of a Japanese torpedo that hit a U.S. battleship during WW2. Sometime in the ’80s, the association of former crewmen of the battleship gathered up these fragments, and sent them to the museum, along with a note that read something along the lines of: “Here’s your torpedo back. We figured you might be missing it. We apologize for the damage we did to it when we hit it with our battleship.”
Funny stuff.
