I saw her passing by just before sunset tonight. I doubt that any of the photos came out, I was swapping lenses during the best lighting. Guess I should grab the memory card and take look.

Farewell to what was known as the most dangerous ship in the Navy when I served in the MarDet. Good times on that final cruise. Persian Gulf, Somalia, Perth and Sydney. Shellback and Plank Owner.

Danger to who? We used to call the Forrestal “USS Zippo,” because of the frequent fires aboard. Sylvania was tied up across from Sylvania for a couple weeks and one of their QM gang told me they did have to drill the duty fire party because they had the real thing every day. I had a hard time believing that.

Every day, however, the call came “This is no drill…duty fire party provide.”

Being career Army I still find this picture emotional to look at. Rest well fine ship.

My father was on the USS Bremerton (CA 130) and we lived there for a few months while it was in drydock. We used to go fishing off the Reserve Fleet piers. Great fishing but kind of eerie. Very quiet, and all those deserted ships. I always wondered about their histories.
