“Ya get drunk, ya do sh*t!”

Apparently.

It was 42 degrees and raining lightly around 3 a.m. on Monday when an inebriated off-duty employee for a government intelligence agency decided it was a good time to fly his friend’s drone…

In the process of what officials describe as nothing more than a drunken misadventure, the employee managed to highlight another vulnerability in the protective shield that the Secret Service erects around the White House complex.

We will assume he had the next day off.  Though my guess is he didn’t get everything done that he had planned.  And he probably had to answer a lot of questions with a headache.  It also reinforces my old First Sergeant’s adage.  “Nothing good happens to a drunk after midnight.”

The hysteria! What does the world think when they see America squealing and dancing atop a chair over the most remarkably silly things?

“Hey, bubba, hold mah beer!” Major facepalm.

Those suckers are pretty expensive. I’m wondering if the employee in question has to pay for the quadcopter.

You can use the Amazon link on the right sidebar to get the same model quad copter for around $60.

From what I read in the reviews, one issue is that for beginning pilots, it’s pretty easy to become disoriented in piloting the things (even while sober!) and have it fly off never to be seen again. Somehow, I suspect that’s what happened here.

The control scheme takes some getting used to as well. My wife bought me an el-cheapo remote controlled “helicopter” for Christmas last year (after I begged and begged for it – I envisioned chasing our cats around the house with it- it would have been great!). Unfortunately, the el-cheapo models use IR sensors to communicate with the controller. So, first thing I did with it (outside, since I wasn’t allowed to use it inside the house) was launch it over the roof of the house, where it promptly lost signal and auto-rotated back to earth. I think I got that thing stuck in every tree in the front yard.

How do we know that defense didn’t work? What if the quad-copter (not a drone) encountered the white house’s electromagnetic defenses, and came down .

Based on my observation, not much good happens to a drunk before midnite either. Getting drunk is not one of the more intelligent things one can do. Spending a bit of time at the Bad Canstatt Army Hospital ER with a Baseball injury was an enlightening experience for me when I was 14. Some of the strangest injuries came in with junior troops having a nice evening bash with too much beer.

According to the story, it was a DJI Phantom. Drop that term into Amazon and you’ll see a DJI Phantom runs about $479. A Phantom 2 is $579. Not sure what the differences are. Add a camera gimbal and the price really skyrockets.

    Closest I came to $60 was a Phantom 2 shell body for $68.88. :-/

One story I read said it was a far more reasonably priced quad copter.
