The Air Force has always treated its helicopter community as the red-headed stepchildren of the service- you know, not real pilots. That is, until a real pilot is shot down and wants someone to haul him back to the O-Club in time for Happy Hour. Riddle me this… how brave do you have to be to fly a lumbering helicopter into the same air defense environment that tagged a supersonic strike jet?

    Not that the B-1 and F-18 are bad aircraft, but I just don’t think they can replace “Sandy” as well as the A-10 could.

    “History repeats itself” is a common saying. One bit of history I recall is the Air Force scrambling to find A-1s during Vietnam, since the AF had no other suitable aircraft available. They even attempted to buy some back from the French.

    Of course I am sure we will never have circumstances in the future requiring accuracy where laser designators or GPS targeting are unavailable.
