The Navy has selected the Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor to replace the Northrop Grumman C-2A Greyhound as its next carrier onboard delivery (COD) aircraft, according to a Jan. 5 memo signed by Department of the Navy leadership.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) — signed by Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert, Marine Commandant Gen. Joseph Dunford and Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus — will have the Navy buy four V-22s starting in Fiscal Year 2018 to 2020, according to the document first reported by Breaking Defense.

Spill tipped me to this this morning. I’d have gone a different route, but I can see why they did this. For one thing, it will make supplying the escorts easier. For another, it’s a type already in production, simplifying the parts pipeline.  The community will be small enough they should have no issues using the Marines RAG as the schoolhouse.

    And your link is the problem.
    The V-22 can not haul that piece of hardware.
    Never mind that that piece of hardware should not exist, nor be required by the Navy.
    A single-engined Nav-Air aircraft in this day is stupid.
    The day of the “Gunfighters” is past.
    On the other-paw, the proposed replacement for the C2 using the same wings and hardware with only a different fuselage would do the job. Obviously, without pork going to the “right” congressional districts, that option is “Right Out”.
    Does it occur to anyone else here that Navy “Procurement” (and I mean that just like it sounds) is corrupt?

    The “in production” part probably drove it. The way programs seem to go now they’d spend twenty years to get a poor solution.

    A modified/upgraded Greyhound would have been better, methinks. However, with the merger of Grumman and Northrop, the tooling and jigs maybe gone, and the re-creation of them for the wings alone would be prohibitively expensive.

    One proposal is to give the C-2 the same wings, cockpit & engine as the E-2, which is still in production. I’m not so sure the jig is up, yet.
