The city of Houston has issued subpoenas demanding a group of pastors turn over any sermons dealing with homosexuality, gender identity or Annise Parker, the city’s first openly lesbian mayor. And those ministers who fail to comply could be held in contempt of court.

“The city’s subpoena of sermons and other pastoral communications is both needless and unprecedented,” Alliance Defending Freedom attorney Christina Holcomb said in a statement. “The city council and its attorneys are engaging in an inquisition designed to stifle any critique of its actions.”

Not sure I understand this. Most churches now days have their sermons free for download from their website. If not, then anyone can go to the church and hear them live. Are they seeking to ban the future preaching of those sermons? I don’t see this ending well for the City government.

Everytime I think Texas is doing everything right (in comparison to us, California) I read about something really stupid – first the DA from Austin and Rick Perry and now this.

Perfect opportunity for peaceful civil disobedience and Christian witness. Pastors should take that opportunity.

OR, just tell the DA: “My dog ate my sermons. But not to worry, I forwarded COMPLETE COPIES of all my past sermons to Ms. Lois Lerner. Please contact her, and get the fcuk off my front porch.”

You’ve just hit on the chief reason for the subpoenas. They’re an effort to chill free speech and prevent churches from commenting in the public square. This is nothing different from fascism and communism.
