SGT Bowe Bergdahl, since his return to US control after years of captivity in Afghanistan, has been a patient in a military treatment facility, undergoing reintegration. Apparently, that reintegration process is near completion, and Bergdahl will soon be reporting for duty with a troop unit.

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has finished undergoing medical care and counseling at an Army hospital in San Antonio and could return to an Army unit on a Texas post as early as Monday, a defense official tells CNN.

Bergdahl was held captive by militants for five years before he was released in May in exchange for five senior Taliban members held by the U.S. military. He has always maintained his active duty status. He cannot retire from the service or be discharged until the investigation concerning his disappearance and captivity in Afghanistan is complete.

For about three weeks, Bergdahl has been an outpatient at the San Antonio hospital, and military officials have interviewed him about his time in captivity.

Bergdahl is set to take a job at Fort Sam Houston, the Army post in San Antonio, according to an Army statement Monday. He will return to “regular duty within the command where he can contribute to the mission,” the statement said.

Since Bergdahl was an infantryman, and there are no Infantry units at Ft. Sam, I suspect he’s going to be placed at a desk in a headquarters unit somewhere on post, with the primary duty of answering the phone. That’s actually fairly common for people who are otherwise not capable of performing a full range of military duties.  I’m curious about the two troops assigned to be his minders. I’m sure they’re just thrilled to be given that chance to excel.

Aggiesprite suspects there might just be  a whiff of politics involved with the ongoing investigation surrounding the circumstances of Bergdahl’s departure from his post in Afghanistan. I don’t know anything about MG Dahl, the investigating officer. I do know that to date, none of the other soldiers that were there have been reinterviewed.  And as I said in the comments at Aggie’s, I strongly suspect Big Army hopes this will fade from the headlines, and the Army can quietly discharge Bergdahl into obscurity.

    So if I’m Joe Marine just back from “somewhere”, and I’m under investigation for desertion (if not treason), would I just get assigned to answer phones or would I be sitting in a cell? Honestly curious as I have no idea what is normal in this circumstance. (I imagine I’d be sitting in a cell.)

    Under the same circumstances, you would be under investigation and assigned somewhere until it’s finished and an Article 32 hearing held for you, if the investigation generated evidence of what you just accused yourself of.

    I am also curious….what was the length of SGT Bergdahl’s original enlistment, did the clock stop while he was a prisoner, did his unit ever report him when he went missing as AWOL, was he considered in a desertion status which would cause the clock on his enlistment to pause.

    I wonder because I cannot imagine he is still within his original term of enlistment unless his initial enlistment was for 6 years.

    He’s served his purpose for the administration by providing an excuse to release five of the worst of the worst captured enemy. So the photo op didn’t work out all that well – that’s how it goes. After things cool down a little more, they probably discharge him for convenience of the government. After-all, the Army is downsizing right now so this move would save everybody money. It’s kinda like getting your pink slip when you’re still in country.

    Bo is the kind of returning vet that DHS doesn’t have any problems with – anybody that served like Chesty Puller – that’s another matter.

    Everyone’s first enlistment is for a period of 8 years, with an active duty commitment of 2, 3, 4 or 5 years, and the balance in the reserves, unless in case of emergency or as otherwise directed by law or the Secretary of the Army.

    I pretty much gave up much hope when I found out we quit making people somehow honor their enlistment contracts and just let them go back home with a GD. I remember a time when you were going to finish YOUR obligation somehow, someway even if it meant being the Latrine Orderly in a Correctional Training Facility until end of active duty commitment.

    I would like to think that any current investigation would be just to review and summarize the investigation that should have begun five years ago and possibly to add any new material and maybe get Bergdahl’s story.
