The UN special rapporteur on torture has formally accused the US government of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment towards Bradley Manning, the US soldier who was held in solitary confinement for almost a year on suspicion of being the WikiLeaks source.

Juan Mendez has completed a 14-month investigation into the treatment of Manning since the soldier’s arrest at a US military base in May 2010. He concludes that the US military was at least culpable of cruel and inhumane treatment in keeping Manning locked up alone for 23 hours a day over an 11-month period in conditions that he also found might have constituted torture.

I don’t know what concerns me more:

A:  Some poor security guard had to strip search Manning every day in order to prevent a suicide attempt.

B:  A UN investigator burned 14 months looking into conditions of a 11 month solitary confinement.

On the plus side, the way things are going the UN will soon consider RoboCalls inhuman torture….

    I don’t have a whole lot of sympathy for Manning, but I never did hear a good reason why he had to be held under such conditions. No, not torture, not by any stretch. But was he really that high risk of a detainee? I’ve not seen any great evidence of it.

    Brad, I would agree with anyone that says Robocalls are a form of torture.

    The report I read at the time said he threatened suicide. There was a dispute as to whether it was a joke or whether it was real. The position of the jailers was that it was a threat and thats how they react to it.

    Whoa, whoa, hold it a second! I think we found a purpose for those robots, with really long arms and I mean, LONG! Why should some security guard have the hazardous duty of doing a strip search on this, so-called, individual. Don’t forget, a robot can get really into it!

    Facts also dictate that putting him into GenPop probably would have been pretty bad for his health as well. Now I’ll freely admit, my experience with prison is non-existant, but I can’t imagine that with what he’s accused of, he’d be very popular with his neighbors in the slammer.
