Fortification

I found this pic over at Theo’s.     I don’t know where is it, but it certainly shows the challenge that infantry and sappers would have assaulting fortifications in the 19th century. Craig is our resident expert on fortifications. Perhaps he can weigh in.

It’s in the Netherlands – Bourtange is the name. See http://weburbanist.com/2010/03/11/starry-knights-14-stellar-star-shaped-fortresses/

Star fort built before, but showing the influences that lead to, the Vauban style of fortifications. A lot less moat, but you can see the direction Vauban pushed fortification design considering Fort McHenry, MD. (http://www.scienceviews.com/photo/browse/SIA2057.jpg).

I’m surprised they left out the Brod Fortress in Croatia from that list.

Sure, hence the term “siege train.”

But the fort has arty to shoot back with.

I remember leaving Key West in a boat and watching a big brick building grow out of the Gulf approaching Ft Jefferson.

Who can forget the first fort in America?
