Many of you may have noticed that the war in Afghanistan isn’t going well. And recently, the US has taken to making raids into Pakistan that have that nation somewhat upset.

We are please to claim an ethnic Pakistani as one of our internet correspondents. Muslihoon is on a somewhat more cerebral level than we are, but we hope to use him to address some of these issues in the near future.

I consider the fight in Pakistan the key to winning the war in Afghanistan. History shows that an insurgency that has a sanctuary is very tough to defeat. In effect, Pakistan has ceded sovreignity in some of its territory to the Taliban and Al Queda. The US and Afghanistan can ill afford to allow that state of affairs to continue. We hope to draw Muslihoon into the discussion in the near future, but for now, be sure to read what he has to say.

    I’m with you bud. How far can we push the Paki’s without a counter productive backlash. We can kick the crap out of the Taliasshats all day long, but if they go back across with impunity we’re screwed. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I thought the country is worse today than when I left 2 years ago. I know the town I was in went from virtual safety to being the badlands. (Ghazni)

    TSO, I’m working from a position of massive ignorance, having never been there. But Muslihoon will be posting a lot of stuff on Pakistan and I’m planning on picking his brains. I think the Army has relearned most of the COIN lessons it had forgotten over the years, and can do a great job at the tactical level. Whether we can figure out a way to thread the needle at the operational and strategic levels remains to be seen. The fact that Pakistan is an unstable nation with nukes makes this a far tougher proposition that Iraq. We’ll see.
